Cheap places to eat in Bruges

Bruges is beautiful, but thanks to a few quirks in Belgian tax law, eating dinner there can be outrageously expensive. Sometimes it's worth it (there's no price I wouldn't pay for a top notch fondue) but just in case you want to save a few cents on a trip to this stunning city, I thought I'd put together a list of the most affordable eateries the BF and I uncovered while there.

Soup - simple homemade lunches and friendly atmosphere

Simply named 'soup' this tiny cafe off the main market square serves up a choice of homemade soups with bread, butter, fruit, cheese, croutons and half a panini on the side for just 8.50 euros. It's a one-woman operation, but everything is made fresh from scratch and service is friendly and welcoming.

Serveria Bagelsalon is a pleasingly hipsterish cafe serving an interesting range of bagels (think beyond the standard salmon and cream cheese) as well as homemade cakes. The hot chocolate is as amazing as you would expect in belgium, and you can get a good filling brunch (or lunch) here for under 10 euros each. If you want to spend more, however, they also offer a bagel-centric afternoon tea complete with a glass of champagne.

Hot waffles on a stick don't really need much explaining, except to say that the freshly made ones dipped in melted chocolate are a seriously indulgent experience. Not that that's a bad thing, but don't say you weren't warned. At 4 euros each these are a fun snack to try before scaling the 200m tall bell tower (you'll need the sugar).

Li o Lait  - Breakfast & coffee for 7 euros each

This chilled cafe has a slightly student-y vibe to it, with hippy wall decor and mismatched chairs. The food is excellent and the long list of indulgent coffees and hot drinks has to be tried. The honey cinnamon milk and white chocolate latte are particularly highly recommended. There are a few different breakfast and lunch deals, meaning you can get a good filling meal for 7 - 8 euros per person.

moeder babelutte - high quality, not so high price tags

This isn't so much a place to eat (unless you have a crazy sweet tooth) as it is a place to pick up treats to take home. There are a lot of chocolate shops in Bruges. A lot. But Moeder Babelutte offers a range of slightly less tourist-trap-feeling chocolates sold by weight, at lower prices than the stores opposite the main squares. Also all customers are invited to try the store's own chocolate fountain, which is a perk.
